Giving 1: Widow’s Mite

The Widow’s Mite

Bible: Mark 12:41-44, Revelations 4:11 , Proverbs 3:9-10, Malachi 3:8-12, Matt 6:24-34 , Matt 6:25-34 (Do Not Worry), Matthew 6:19-20

Lesson: (Have a large metal bowl and different sized coins. At least a very large one and a very small one) Drop a large amount of coins into the bowl. Wow that is a big sound. Then drop one dime into the bowl. That isn’t as loud is it? Do it again so that they can hear the difference. The people knew God said to give to the church so the Priest would put a bowl out to collect the money. Back in Jesus time, the bowl was metal and it would make a loud sound for those who gave a lot and a little sound for those who gave a little. The Priests would think that the people that gave a lot and made a big sound were closer to God. While Jesus was teaching a little old lady that was a widow(that means her husband was dead) put a little coin into the pot and it didn’t make very much sound. Jesus said to all of the people that the women gave more than everyone else. Even the people who made lots of sound. How could that be? She gave all that she had and left trusting God for the things she needed. But the others who gave a lot still had a lot more money in their pockets. She gave everything to God because she thought God was most important. And when she gets to Heaven God will show her the great treasures that she made by making Him most important. (Put the coins in the bowl to show the different sounds. Then When She gets to Heaven, God will give her much treasure but the others less. Show the sound of much for the widow and little for the others who didn’t give as much to God.)
Why should we give to God:
1. Giving is thanking God (The little old women was thanking God for giving her all she needed)
2. Giving is obeying God (The old women was obeying God’s words to give.)
3. Giving is Trusting God (The women trusted God to take care of her.)
4. Giving to God builds treasures in heaven (Matthew 6:19-20)
God was more important to her than anything else!
Materials: Large Metal Bowl, Handful of coins, one dime

Important Point:
Why we give:
1. Giving is thanking God (all is His, Revelations 4:11, Proverbs 3:9-10)
2. Giving is obeying God (Malachi 3:8-12, Proverbs 3:9-10)
3. Giving is Trusting God (Commandment 1+2, Matt 6:24-34)
4. Giving to God builds treasures in heaven (Matthew 6:19-20)

Direction: Print out The Widow’s Mite and Widow’s Mite Tabs. Cut on the dotted lines and glue the box to The Widow’s Mite Page. While they are coloring the pages, ask them questions about the story. As they answer them correctly give them a chocolate coin. Let everyone answer at least one question. They can eat the chocolate and glue both sides of the gold wrapper to the page. (Instruct them to open the chocolate coins carefully so that they can flatten them out. (Two per child is more then enough for our needs and their parents.)

Learning Moments:

They sure had ants in their pants today. It was difficult to keep them out of camera. (Stardom is so alluring) A note of caution: Don’t throw the coins in the metal bowl. They come jetting out and who knows where they will land. Not to mention, that stunt was very loud for such a small room.
