Sin and Forgiveness II: Communion
Bible: 1 Corinthians 11:24-25
Lesson: Why did Jesus have to hurt so much (younger: get big ouchies) on the cross for us? –Because He loves us so much.
How do we get to be close to Jesus? –By Faith, You must believe that Jesus died on the cross for your sins. (younger: “To take away our sin ouchies”) And proclaim, Jesus is King of your life. He wants to live in your hearts.
Last week we asked Jesus into our heart to forgive our sin ouchies. This week we get to remember what Jesus did for us. We use communion to remember. The grape juice is red like the blood of Jesus and reminds us that Jesus got hurt to take our sins away. The bread reminds us that Jesus’ body was broken on the cross for us. Taking this juice and bread into our stomachs (younger: tummies) reminds us that Jesus wants to live inside of us.
Jesus was eating Passover with his friends. The Passover Jesus ate may have looked something like this. (Have the Passover items on a plate in the middle of the table and your running shoes and coat on.) Now, during the Passover Jesus did something a little different that year. We call the bread, juice, and instructions he gave “communion.” When we have communion with our friends, it reminds us of what Jesus did for us. We want to always remember that Jesus is with us in our hearts.
Activity: Communion with the Children: 1Corinthians 11:24-25
Explain to the children that you will be giving them a small piece of bread and that they are to wait until I tell you that you can eat the bread. When they all have the bread, you say:
Read: 1Corinthians 11:24 NIrV
Important Point: Communion reminds us that Jesus died for us on the cross and His blood washes our sins away. Taking this juice and bread into our tummies reminds us that Jesus wants to live inside of us.
Direction: Print out The Lord’s Supper hand-out (one for each child). Have the children color the picture. Hand them their laminated Passover mat and add a plate and very small cup. Follow the place mat’s directions as to how to step through the Passover with Jesus and do it. Eat it with your running shoes on and your coat ready to go quickly. This is the different thing Jesus did, step through communion with the children.
Materials: Small paper plates and cups, grape juice, matzo/allergy free crackers (like rice crackers), grape juice, parsley, Matzo, hard boiled egg, celery, salt water, apples/nuts/honey, bookmark your Bible, and a candle.
Charoset: (Passover “mortar”)
- 2 cups walnuts
- 3 apples, chopped
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 2 Tbsp honey
- 1/2 tsp lemon juice or citric acid powder (to keep the apples from oxidizing)
Matzo (Passover bread)
- 1 cup water
- 3 cups flour
-mix, roll into 1 inch balls, flatten into very thin pancakes , poke wholes in the top with a fork, and cook on a hot cast iron skillet (on both sides 2-3 min. total). Time is really important- max 18 minutes from when the water is mixed in to finished cooking. The water and time will give the flour a chance of growing yeast. And God said that no yeast should be in the bread at Passover.
