Show Proper Respect

Show Proper Respect

Bible: 1 Peter 2:17 NIrV
17 Show proper respect to everyone. Love the community of believers. Have respect for God. Honor the king.

(Dress-up to be strictly business.) “I am ‘strictly business’ because of my tie. I like manners, because it tells the people I meet that I respect them. I want to tell you about someone in the Bible that reminds us to show proper respect.” 1 Peter 2:17 says, “Show proper respect to everyone. Love the community of believers. Have respect for God. Honor the king.”
What is respect? is showing others they are special through your actions and words.
Who does this verse say we are to show respect to? –everyone. You need to show respect to people you like and people you don’t like!
How? Luke 6:31 says, “Do to others as you want them to do to you.”
Why? -Because God says so is a good answer. I also want to point out another verse. Genesis 1:27 says,” So God created man in his own likeness. He created him in the likeness of God. He created them as male and female.” Each person should be respected, not necessarily for what they do, but for who they are…made in the likeness of God. Both boys and girls are made in the image of God. Image is a word we use for likeness. An image can be a picture of something. It is not that thing, it is just a picture. The Bible says we are made in the image of God. We are not God. We were made to look something like Him. (Show them a picture of something. Point out the difference between the picture and the thing in the picture.) Using your manners is a good way to show proper respect.
What are manners? -the nice things we do to make people feel special. These are the same manners we want others to use with us (Luke 6:31). There are different manners for different places around the world. You should learn the manners for the place you are so that everyone you meet fills respect. If you kiss someone’s cheek that you just met in the USA, they think you were a little strange. But in some parts of the world that would be a normal greeting. We are going to talk about how you can show respect through your “Greeting Manners” in the USA.
Greeting Manners in the USA
1. Stand up to show respect in the USA (in other countries you might bow to show humility)
2. Look in their eyes (everybody is created in the image of the God, Genesis 1:27)
3. Posture (shoulders straight, chin up and smile)- you are a representative of the God 1 Peter 2:9
4. Hand shake (offer the right hand, web-to-web, not too tight and not loosy-goosy)
5. Say a friendly “hello” or “how do you do.”
6. Use a title if they are older them you or have a special position (“Mrs, Mister, Sir, Teacher, Doctor, President…)
*As the teacher (with a small class) go around the room and greet each child with the new greeting manners.

Learning Moments: I am still getting use to having a “real preschool” class. They are so cute but I have to scale back my information. My lessons really can span into 2nd or 3rd grade.
