Recipes for Crafts

Paint Recipes:

Fast drying scratch off paint:
1 tsp flavoring extract
3/4 cup cornstarch
3/4 cup black paint
Use a very light coat of paint over a very heavy coat of crayon. Spread with a foam brush because it will be easier to get a thinner, more ever layer of paint. It will start to dry in 5 min. At that point if you are in a hurry, you can let the children scratch and it will turn out great still. (just a little more messy) It takes about 20 min. for it to completely dry. (A very light coat of paint means that you can see some streaks of crayon through the black.)

Red Cabbage Paint

1/4 head red cabbage
1 cup water
1/4 cup white vinegar
2 Tbsp baking soda
Blend 1/4 head of red cabbage  with 1 cup water in a food processor.  Boil the water and the cabbage in the microwave (If you don’t have a microwave just use the stove top.)  When it comes to a boil remove it from the heat and let it cool for ten minutes.  Strain out the cabbage chunks through a coffee filter or small strainer.  The liquid should be purple.  If you don’t have red cabbage in your area the same chemical is in apple skins, plums, poppies, cornflowers, and grapes.  Do the same thing with about 2 cups of one of these items.
Slim Recipe:
2 cups water boiling water
1/2 cup cornstarch
5 drops green food coloring
1 cups cold water (try 1 1/2 cups water and let me know)
Bring 2 cups water, 1/2 cup corn starch, and food coloring to a boil. Mix continually. When it congeals take the pot off the burner and add one cup of cold water. Store with the lid on. I doubled the recipe because I had a glass gallon jar with a wide mouth.

Sock Bean Bag Instructions:
4 small baby socks (ex. 6-18months)
1 cup small white beans or lentals
4 rubber bands or sewing machine
Pour .25 cup uncooked lentils or white beans in each sock and use the rubber bands to close the socks. You can sew the top of the sock for more security.

Play Dough in a bag

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 Tbsp alum
  • 2 Tbsp corn starch
  • 1 quart ziplock

Directions before class: Add the dry ingredients to the quart bag, i.e., flour, salt, 5 drops food coloring and alum.
Directions for class: Add 1/2 cup warm water, 1 Tbsp oil, and 1 tsp vanilla to the quart bag and have your child squish it in the bag until it resembles a lump of play dough.  Take out the play dough and play.  You may want to add a rolling pin and spoon to the playing equipment.  Use wax paper to protect your table. (Makes enough for about 4-6 students)
