Magi

Magi go to Bethlehem

Bible: Matthew 2:1-12 (Paraphrase Matthew 2:1-5, Read Matthew 2:6-12) NIrV

Lesson: After Jesus was born, there was a big star in the sky and the Wise Men from the East rode on their camels following the star to come see the King of the Jews, baby Jesus. When they got to Jerusalem they asked King Herod (Matthew 2:2) … “Where is the child who has been born to be king of the Jews? When we were in the east, we saw his star. Now we have come to worship him.” King Herod was very mad, he didn’t want anyone else but him to be king of the Jews. He asked his priests where the Bible says the king was to be born. Matthew 2:4-12 5 “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied. “This is what the prophet has written. He said, 6 “ ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are certainly not the least important among the towns of Judah. A ruler will come out of you. He will be the shepherd of my people Israel.’ “ —(Micah 5:2) 7 Then Herod called for the Wise Men secretly. He found out from them exactly when the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem. He said, “Go! Make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, bring me a report. Then I can go and worship him too.” 9 After the Wise Men had listened to the king, they went on their way. The star they had seen when they were in the east went ahead of them. It finally stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were filled with joy. 11 The Wise Men went to the house. There they saw the child with his mother Mary. They bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures. They gave him gold, incense and myrrh. 12 But God warned them in a dream not to go back to Herod. So they returned to their country on a different road.
13 When the Wise Men had left, Joseph had a dream. In the dream an angel of the Lord appeared to him. “Get up!” the angel said. “Take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you to come back. Herod is going to search for the child. He wants to kill him.” Joseph, Mary and baby Jesus left for Egypt that very night.

Important Point Year One and Three: The Best gift to Jesus is YOU!

Direction Year One: Print out The Magi Visit Jesus and the Foil Page. Cut on the dotted line so that the Magi with Jesus picture is a flap. Cut out a piece of tin foil, for each child, that is bigger then the outside of the frame, yet smaller then the width of the paper. Tape the foil onto the page labeled Foil Paper. Then glue The Magi Visit Jesus to the top of the Foil Paper. Have the children color the picture. The Tin Foil acts as a mirror so that the reflection of the child is the gift to Jesus.
Materials: Tin foil, scissors, masking tape, and colors; optional: card stock/paper and glue.

Activities:
Extra activities: Make three Kings Bread: If you don’t have time to make bread, just buy already made bread dough and start at the rolling out instructions**.
*For gluten allergies use my Gluten Free Bread Recipe.

My Large Recipe for Whole Wheat Bread: (Use it to make Three Kings Bread)
5 Lbs Whole Wheat (Use Winter Red Wheat -more gluten then most wheat flours)
2 Tbsp and 2 tsp sea salt
4 rounded Tbsp Powdered Milk (If allergy use Soy Flour)
1 cup Honey
3/4 cup oil (I use Canola)
6 1/2 cups warm water
3 Tbsp Yeast
1/2 cup butter
2 cup brown sugar
4 Tbsp Cinnamon, ground
Mix the top three dry ingredients. Mix the brown sugar and cinnamon and set aside. Mix wet ingredients and let set while yeast warms up. Mix them together. I use my hands to mix, because it is not real picky. Cover with a damp towel and let sit for about an hour or until the bread doubles. Punch it down. Use about half of the dough. **Roll it out, rub with 1/2 a stick of butter (1/4 cup) and sprinkle with half of the brown sugar mix. Wrap a bean in tinfoil (about golf ball size) and place on the rolled out bread. Roll the bread tightly starting at the long side. Make a wreath out of the long bread roll. Cut Two inch slices around the outside every two inches. Cover with a damp rag and place in a warm spot to rise (45 min.- 1 1/2 hours depending on the barometric pressure). When it is doubled, You have enough to make Two Wreaths or you can make yourself some whole wheat bread. Bake at 350 for 1 hour. Transfer to a cooling rack to cool. Serve with honey butter
Honey Butter: 1/2 cup honey and 1/2 softened butter. Mix together and ready to serve. If there are children that are allergic to butter use coconut oil. It is a solid at room temperature. But know that coconut is a tree nut and be sure that no one is allergic to that.

Learning Moments:

This lesson went well. Although there were some that thought the tin foil hat was ugly, most appreciated the sparkly creativity. Be sure there are no edges on your cutout dotted line, “the Magi track.” The Magi will get stuck.
